God Gold of the Day
“Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?”
Paul writes this seventh chapter in Romans and throughout the chapter he is admitting the intensity of the spiritual battle he’s constantly in. I can’t begin to tell ya how often I think the same kind of questions, how do I beat it? Why do I have to go through this? When is it going to end? What can I do to beat it? All these questions I constantly ask which only leads me to doubt, fear, and worry over my daily struggles. No matter what it is we all have some struggle with sin because Paul states later in Romans “all fall short of the glory of God.” Key word, “all.” That’s where my struggle is with the strongholds of sin in my life. I live defeated and hopeless because I base my relationship with the Lord on my sin life and in my sin life the devil is always surrounding me with the lies that “you’ll never be good enough, you’ll never beat this addiction, you’ll always be a failure, why even try, you know you’ll lose.” It’s a terrible place to be. Completely dominated and controlled by the lies about your sin. That’s the big thing I noticed today, if I base everything off of how my sin life is, or how I didn’t spend time in a devotion to start my day. It’s simple little things like that where I fall into the trap of living in the belief that I’m defeated before the day even happens. If you believe you’re defeated you can guarantee that you’re going to live defeated. With that kind of belief system the question Paul asks is true, who’s going to free me from this life of slavery and defeat? When I base the view of my relationship with the Lord off my weakness and if I committed the big sin that I struggle so much with then when temptation comes and the lies pour in, I’ll fail every time. How do we get better? Where is our hope and peace over these strongholds that weigh so heavy in our lives and makes us feel defeated.
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.””
This is a verse from John where Jesus answers all the questions and all the lies so simply! Jesus gives us peace in our times of trouble, how is that? With the fact that HE’S ALREADY OVERCOME THE WORLD!!!!! He even tells us the truth about our lives, just because we are a Christian doesn’t mean this life will be sunshine and rainbows. The devil is going to come at us with everything he’s got because every move we make for Christ is a move against his evil schemes. Jesus came to this earth, lived a perfect life, took all of our sins on the cross as our perfect sacrifice because we were in bondage to sin and death. Nothing we could ever do could set us free, only His perfect sacrifice and rising from the grave, where the chains of death were broken to all who believe in His wonderful name! We don’t have to base our relationship with Him off our sin, He’s washed us clean, paid all of our sin debt. That doesn’t give us the right to sin as much as we want but as you grow in His grace and love, the more you realize how free you truly are. How could you not want to live to please the One who gave His life to give you LIFE, a life of freedom from being a slave to sin and a life for eternity?
I say all that to show you what I struggle with so often and the truth about Christ that takes that mindset of defeat away. Don’t base your belief and relationship with the Lord off your weakness and incapability to be perfect. You’re going to sin and trials will come your way bringing so much pain and sorrow. The good news is Christ gave us another way, He paid the price for our sin so when we do fall into temptation we can come to Him and confess how we failed. The best part, His blood washes you clean and God forgives you of that failure. Christ didn’t die for us to live in hopeless defeat, He died so we can live in victory. So when you start feeling like you’re not good enough, you sin, you miss your morning devotion, don’t let that dictate the way you live the rest of your day. Take your weakness to Christ, lay them at the foot of the cross, trust in His forgiveness but also trust in His resurrection. Put your belief in the fact that you are one with Christ, as He raised from the grave so did you, He has set you free from the defeat. You may lose a battle or two but thank God we can live under the good news that He has won the war!!! When the devil starts surrounding you with lies of defeat, there’s nothing you can do to fight except believe in what Christ has already done!
If you believe you’re a no good defeated sinner then chances are you’re going to live like one. If you believe the truth, that you are a child of God, a freedom fighter for the Kingdom of God, if you believe you’ve been set free from the things that the world tries to tear you down with, if you believe that Christ has overcame the world, you’ll live like it. I pray we can move from listening to the deceiver and the Lord will help us in living as true believers! I hate that I’ve wasted so many days of my life living in the defeat of my yesterdays but thank God we don’t have to live that way today!!! He has won!! He has set us free!!!! Forget the past and move forward embracing the freedom Christ has given you!!!! When you get knocked down, remind yourself of what’s He’s already done
