“But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here! ” Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?””
Reading through this story of Jesus walking on water and then Peter getting in on the water walking action. So much can be taken away from this story but the big one for me today was Jesus’ constant love. While traveling across the sea the disciples were faced with strong winds surrounding them. They became afraid when looking out and seeing Jesus walking on water toward them. So often we face resistance in our lives, constantly being pushed back and away from our focus being on Jesus. What’s so awesome to see here, Jesus defies the odds and meets the disciples in the middle of their struggle. He says don’t be afraid because I am here, I got you and I’m always here for you. No matter how tough it gets I’m here for you. The toughest times in life are the toughest times to fix our focus and depend on Jesus. Why would such a perfect and powerful Savior come to me when I’m in such a weak and painful state? When things are going good focusing on Jesus goes together like peanut butter and jelly. That’s what separates Jesus from normal and makes His love even greater. Whether good times or bad, Jesus is there, Jesus shows His love for us at such a deeper level by being there for us when we are at our lowest points, when we don’t feel worthy, when we are terrified, when we are taking hits from every side, Jesus comes to us in the wildest of ways to say, “dude don’t be so afraid, I’m right here, I’m always here, I’ll chase you down no matter what the weather or how you feel cause I love you and want the best for you.” Wow.
Then not only does Jesus show up in our tough times when our faith in Him is so small, He is always there when we call. Jesus is that really you? Jesus tells Peter yes, I’ll prove it, come to me. Doesn’t make sense why He’d be there for us loving us in our trials, doesn’t make sense why He’d love us enough to answer our call, doesn’t make any sense why He’d answer our call telling us to step out of our fear and closer to Him. May not make sense but Jesus’ love has no barriers and no limitations. With eyes fixed on Jesus, Peter walks on the water, Jesus proves once again that He loves us even more than we could imagine. Jesus loves us so much He gives us access to His power where impossible becomes reality, He allows us to walk out of our struggle and into His powerful, life changing presence. He loves us so much that even with all the resistance coming at us, He gives us what we need to walk step by step closer to Him and through the obstacles trying to push us back.
It’s when we take our eyes off Jesus we sink. Only with Jesus can we walk on water through our problems and if left up to us we’d stay fallen. Jesus loves us so much He gave us another way out, He gave us Himself to live with and through, He knows we’ll fall daily but when we fall, the times when it’s even tougher to come to Him, once again His love is shown by reaching out to us weak and failure filled humans and picking us up from our fall. Answering our call immediately and always being there for us to reach out and save us from drowning in our weakness and defeat. Wow. Looking at Jesus love for us reverses everything we think we need to do or be, His love gives us the freedom to just live with Him, focus on His perfect power and goodness instead of the troubles that surround us. His love changes everything. Just wow! Let’s embrace His love today!
