You’ve Got a Friend In Me

What’s up family! As I was thinking about what was on my heart today I couldn’t help but think of a verse in Proverbs!

Proverbs 27:17 says “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

I remember specifically hearing this in our locker room in college as our coach told us it takes two people to grow and become stronger. It’s so helpful to have someone along  the way to guide, encourage, and go through all areas of life with. Two friends who bring their ideas and thoughts together can help each other become sharper.

I want to focus on how important it is to have at least one friendship, mentor, or individual in your life that pushes us closer to Christ day in and day out. “There are friends who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother,” says Proverbs 18:24. If you look around you’ll find people who need your friendship. Ask God to reveal them to you, and then take on the real challenge of being a true friend. Be someone who asks the hard questions and loves them even in the midst of the valleys. Someone who isn’t afraid to share the truth in love.

Man, sometimes in my own life I feel as if I have it all figured out but I realize quickly that I need a lot of help. A true friend is so important because a true storm or trial is coming. My dad use to say it best.  He said “you are either on a mountain top or a in a valley. Things might be going great and you are as tall as that mountain, but just know there is a valley on its way and we have to be prepared for what’s coming.”

In light of that, no matter where we are in our lives our God is still the same. The one who raised from the dead, heals the blind, feeds the hungry, etc. Christ hasn’t changed, and I would like to think that no matter what is happening in my life, I can be faithful to him. That’s a lot easier said than done but it takes a true friend to be real with you and tell you the hard things out of love. Sometimes we have to dig deep into our own hearts and check ourselves.

I’ll end and challenge you with this.

“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling  yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you’ve heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” James 1:22-25
