Mind Blown

God Gold of the Day

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,”

-Ephesians 6:10-17

I just want to take a second and give a big shoutout to God’s Word for being so POWERFUL and awesome and filled with Gold and did I say “AWESOME!!!!!” I’ve been looking over this passage a lot lately, studying to teach youth, hearing it in big church on Sunday’s and just learning from so many people along the way. I’ve always heard of the armor of God, especially growing up in church hearing, “put on the armor of God, defend yourself from the devil and his attacks.” But I found myself asking, “what does it look like to put on the armor of God???”

What do you think? I’ll be honest I had no idea and going into teaching middle and high school students this week about putting on the armor of God I hurt at the thought of them sitting there with temptations, struggles, and facing attacks from the enemy in their lives and not having a clue what to do about it. I’m right there with them. How do you put on the armor of God? It also pains me to think about you, and every other follower of Christ who is out there in this world facing this battle of spiritual warfare with the enemy and not having any idea how to defend his blows and stand strong. So with all that to say, I hope this answer I learned really helps you in huge ways with any battle you may be facing.

I started looking into it and realized that our attacks from the devil aren’t physical attacks but as it says in verse 12, it’s in the supernatural, spiritual realm that Satan and his demons attack us. So looking at what it looks like to put on the armor of God, I learned that the armor of God is basically God’s character. Truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, peace. All qualities describing who God is.

To wear the armor of God, it isn’t putting on physical armor like that of a soldier or gladiator but his armor is Him. It’s how we press into learning more and more of God through His Word, prayer, others and just experiencing life with Him. As we grow in our knowledge of who God is, we grow in the covering of His armor in our lives. So many times I’ve tried to put on God’s armor with what I got, reading more of my Bible, praying more, but it’s deeper than that. It’s doing those same things but with the intimacy and being intentional to know more about God, who He is, how He feels about us and what He has done. As it says in verse 10, the foundational verse of this passage, it’s in the Lord’s strength, not your own, it’s in His armor, not your own, anyone else’s or any armor this world offers.

I’ve seen how trying to do it with what I got leaves me falling to the enemy’s attacks, left in doubt, fear, and insecurities. The difference when realizing that God’s armor is just standing in who He is and the identity as a freed, forgiven, worthy and accepted child of God that we have in Him, it changes everything. Instead of fear you have confidence, instead of worry you have hope, instead of doubt you have peace, the only thing causing the change is moving from alone, to what you are as ONE in God!!!! When you face the battle in the truth of who God is and strive daily to learn more and more of Him, growing deeper with Him and experiencing Him in new ways, you go from falling to standing firm in this battle of spiritual warfare we face from the enemy.

My mind is blown but I’m so thankful to see how wearing God’s armor just like this relationship with Him, has nothing to do with me, but it’s all God and who He is. Understanding how you stand with God helps you see how to stand in God’s armor.
