‘Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. ‘
I’ve mentioned the armor of God the last few Golds and I got some GOOD NEWS!!!! We are going to keep digging into it! I talked about the other day that I had a question; we always hear, “put on the armor of God”, it sounds really cool but what does that look like in our lives to live in God’s armor??? I told you I had no idea and it hurt to think of all the people out there that are facing attacks from the enemy day in and day out, falling and going through so much pain with no clue on what to do about it, how to defend these attacks and keep moving forward. It hurts to think about that for myself and even more so thinking about that for you and so many others in this world.
We’re going to keep digging into that question, “what does it look like to put on the armor of God???” I may repeat a lot of what I said in the last Gold but just want to lay a foundation for you and take you through this investigation I’ve had underway searching for this answer.
The first thing we see is in verse 10, Paul makes it clear in verse 10 to be strong IN THE LORD, in the strength of His might. Sounds easy enough but after taking some inventory of my life, I try really hard to be strong in what I got a whole lot more than I trust in God’s strength to get the job done. It’s convicting to see all the areas of my life that I still want to be in control and that I refuse to give up to the Lord to trust in His strength over my own. It’s even more convicting after seeing the results of what happens when I’m going off of what I’ve got, I fall to the schemes of the enemy, I’m filled with fear and insecurities. BUT when I actually trust in the strength of the Lord, everything changes and the outcome is far greater than anything I could ever do on my own.
That was the first big revelation in this search for answers, “I don’t have what it takes.” It’s an extremely humbling truth but it’s the truth about our human state. i see know why Paul says this first, even though it doesn’t seem to fit in the “armor of God”, the battles and talking about spiritual warfare. Paul, being the human he is knows how we don’t have what it takes and he knows how stubborn we are to think we do. I realized that a lot of the times that our toughest battle isn’t always with the attacks we face from the enemy, it’s the battle we face with ourselves. We struggle with getting ourselves out of the way of trusting in the Lord’s strength. That’s when verse 10 started to make more sense, it’s like Paul is telling us this truth first because without getting ourselves out of the way and trusting in God’s strength, without realizing our need for God’s strength and the fact we don’t have what it takes, putting on the armor of God is impossible.
Verse 10 became so real after seeing I don’t have what it takes, I NEED God, to save me, to put on His armor, to live in my strength. The armor of God, allows us to “be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Without God’s armor, using our own or trusting in things of this world to armor us, we’ll fall every time, we won’t be able to stand against the schemes of the evil one. That’s when it became easy to see that it doesn’t matter who I am, what I got or don’t got, putting on the armor of God and really this whole relationship with God is based off of WHO GOD IS and WHAT GOD HAS DONE!!! None of us and all of Him.
That’s where this main point of this message and the next few comes in; Know where you stand with God and you’ll see how to stand firm in God’s armor.
Lean into that truth today and dig into your relationship with God as we take a journey these next few days on what putting on the armor of God looks like in our lives, how we can get armored up in who God is and our identity in Him to stand firm and defend the attacks we face from the enemy. Praying for you today that this message really encourages you and brings you closer to the Lord. After the big answers I’ve found in some examples from God’s Word lately, (1 Samuel 17:32-40) as a sneak peak for ya. Really excited to share these awesome truths with you and get armored up alongside you in this fight we face!
